While not marketed directly as a Christmas show, there is more than a touch of pantomime to Death Drop. Written by Holly Stars, the self-described "Dragatha Christie Murder Mystery" is a glitzy, if somewhat straggly show.The premise is fairly simple — set in 1991, against a stage design which can only be described as what might happen if the set of The Mousetrap was put in a blender with The Pink Panther, a group of guests, ranging from the washed up 80s popstar Shazza (Courtney Act), the stuffy Conservative MP Rich Whiteman (LoUis CYfer), and the American weathergirl Summer Raines (Monet X Change) are summoned to the lonely and deserted Tuck Island for a soiree celebrating the 10th anniversary of Prince Charles and Princess Diana's wedding. Things, inevitably, start to go downhill — scandalous secrets are revealed, and guests are poisoned, decapitated, choked, and shot. But although Death Drop takes its cues from classic murder mysteries, it isn't ever quite able to stick its landings.Part of the problem is Death Drop's pacing — running at a hefty 2 hours and 20 minutes, it has a 60 minute first half which takes a good while to get the wheels on the plot properly spinning, and the twists and turns are backloaded onto an 80 minute second half which quickly begins to drag — no pun intended. Stars' plot is playful and can be delightfully silly at times (a tongue-twisting segment being a standout), but the jokes simply aren't strong enough to sustain such a winding, baggy narrative. There's a real looseness too to the production which can make it feel occasionally like each drag king and queen has been parachuted in from a different show, rather than working as a cohesive whole. Courtney Act and Holly Stars (who also performs) in particular have boundless wells of presence and charm, but it's not enough to buoy up the production's weaknesses — and in the end, it's LoUis CYfer who steals the show as Rich Whiteman, bumbling around the stage with a wonderful, Python-esque physicality.Death Drop is a pleasant enough evening — it rolls along fairly easily, coasting off the natural charisma of its performers — but it rarely hits the heights needed for it to feel like proper escapism. The Garrick Theatre opened in 1889, and is named after actor David Garrick. When the theatre was built, architects discovered an underground river on the site!

The theatre became associated with comedy in 1982 with a four-year run of the farce *No Sex Please, We’re British*. This was the longest-running show at the Garrick, until J. B. Priestley’s *An Inspector Calls* transferred from the [Aldwych Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/aldwych-theatre) in 1995 and resided for six years.

In recent years, a number of musicals have played here, including *A Little Night Music*, *Chicago*, and *The Scottsboro Boys*. In 2015, [Kenneth Branagh](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/stars-on-stage/kenneth-branagh) took up residency at the Garrick for a year-long season of plays with his own theatre company.

The auditorium has three levels – Stalls, Dress Circle and Grand Circle. In the Stalls, the view of the top of the stage is slightly obscured by the overhang of the Dress Circle from Row N onwards. 

In the Dress Circle, the view of the stage is not obscured by the overhang of the Upper Circle, but the ceiling can feeel low for those in the last row. The seats are designed in a horseshoe shape around the theatre and the Dress Circle offers good sightlines.

DEATH DROP, the laugh-a-minute murder mystery returns to the West End at the Criterion Theatre for a strictly limited 7 week run!


When the Criterion Theatre first opened in 1873, the space was designed as a concert hall. The Criterion Theatre is the only West End theatre to be situated almost entirely underground — even the Upper Circle is not at street level. 

The Criterion Theatre housed comic opera in its early years, including works by W. S. Gilbert and George Grossmith. A decade after opening, the theatre had to be renovated to meet the Metropolitan Board of Works standards for ventilation. This work also saw the installation of electricity to the theatre. The building surrounding the theatre was extensively rebuilt between 1989 and 1992, but the Victorian auditorium was well-preserved and still stands today. 

Notable shows at the Criterion Theatre include *The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged)* by the Reduced Shakespeare Company, the long-running play *The 39 Steps* and Mischief Theatre's *The Comedy About A Bank Robbery*.

## Criterion Theatre Seating Information

The auditorium has three levels – Stalls, Dress Circle and Upper Circle.

The front rows of the Stalls offers good views of the stage, though the seating is not raked steeply. 

The Dress Circle has specifically designated ‘restricted view’ seats due to the number of pillars supporting the Upper Circle in Row C.

The Upper Circle offers unrestricted theatre views.
